Android Operating System


Android is a word quite prevalent in today’s electronic field. more and more people are tended to buy Android Tablet PC . But what is Android? For the reader to get a full concept of it. Let’s first see some definitions.

1.Android is perhaps one of the most used Operating System cum framework available for what we call smartphones today. And it is poised to become an all-encompassing framework which will be used not only on simple hand held devices like smart phones but its uses will also be on HDTV’s, Automotive Infotainment systems. Any system which will require a simple, elegant and easy to develop User Interface might be built on Android framework.

2.Android is a Mobile Operating System, developed By Android Inc. and now, marketed by Google. Google and other members of Open Handset Alliance collaborated on Android development and release. Its software stack and framework is built on Linux kernel, which has been very instrumental in its seamless acceptance as an OS of choice in Mobile phones. Android OS consists of over 12 million lines of code written in C / C++ / Java and XML.

3.Android can be visualized basically as a framework of C C++ and Java libraries based on a Linux kernel. Because of this and the fact that Java apps can be effortlessly built through SDK’s the applications are portable on all mobile devices.

The Android system consists of 3 layered stacks:

Application built in Java running on Dalvik Runtime Engine

System Library written on C and C++

Kernel based on Linux

Android system is mostly used in Tablet PC .Android system has developed several versions. My brother has got an 7 inch android tablet pc which runs Android 2.3. Not bad, I have to say. A considerable number of new features were introduced in Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), that include new UI themes, redesigned keyboards, new copy and paste functionality, improved power management, better application management, new download manager, NFC (Near Field Communication), support for VoIP/SIP calls, new Camera application for accessing multiple cameras and supports extra large screens.

Android 2.2 though mostly a stable system, had two revisions. Android 2.2 (Froyo) Rev 1.0 was released in May 2010 and Rev. 2.0 was released in July 2010. Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) was released on 6th Dec 2010. There are a lot of improvements and new features included in Gingerbread. Of course Android 2.3 is a major release.The new kind of tablet RONZI A3 runs it aand proves to functions better than the old one which runs Android 2.2. However Android 2.2 was a minor release, speed improvement was brought in with the integration of Chrome V8 JavaScript engine and JIT optimization, Wi-Fi hotspot feature was added and a new clean UI with tip widget and app market widget was introduced and some of the other app widgets were given a facelift.

Android 3.1 is the first major release to Honeycomb, this is an add on to the Android 3.0 features and the UI. It enhances the capabilities of the OS for both users as well as the developers. With the update, the UI is refined to make it more intuitive and efficient.It also improve the capability of Superpad . Navigation between the five home screens is made easy, a touch of the home button in system bar will take you to frequently used homes screen. The home screen widget can be customized to add more information. And the recent apps list is expanded to more number of applications. The update also supports more varieties of input devices and USB connected accessories.
