Apple has released an update for the iOS 5.0.1 operating system


After select iOS 5 users got a chance to install Apple’s 5.0.1 update a few days early, Apple has issued the software update to the rest of us. Apple released the iPhone 4S, plenty of users began reporting issues with the battery life on the new iPhone, which reportedly drained at an inconveniently rapid rate. This update includes a potential fix for bugs affecting iPhone battery life, adds multitasking gestures to the first-generation iPad and resolves some miscellaneous issues.

The small software update addresses battery bugs, problems with Documents in the Cloud, and multitasking gestures for the first-generation iPad, and improves voice recognition for Aussie iDevice users. "We have found a few bugs that are affecting battery life and we will release a software update to address those in a few weeks." Today, that update arrives, in the form of  iOS 5.0.1. The update is compatible with the iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad and iPad 2, as well as third- and fourth-generation iPod Touch devices.

Wired readers who got the update early provided an overall positive response to the update, saying that it definitely fixed previous battery-related woes. If you're ready to install iOS 5.0.1 on your iOS device, then connect the gadget to iTunes and hit the "check for updates" button. (Alternatively, head into your device's "Settings" The update weighs in at 790 MB in size and takes ten minutes or so to download, TechCrunch says.

A quick perusal of Twitter and tech blogs turns up similar results: iOS 5.0.1 does the job. It also apparently includes a few security updates, the details of which Apple has posted here. After iOS 5 debuted, a growing number of users complained of battery issues and a few other bugs. Last Tuesday, Apple acknowledged the problem and said that a software remedy would be delivered in the next few weeks.
