Hair Growth - Megatek (animal products)
Posted on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 by Arman Zulhajar
Q: This question comes from Courtney, 'I have been wondering about growth aides for a very long time. I was
wondering if you would mind doing a future post about using MN (miconazole nitrate) and megatek.'
A: I have previously done a post on hair growth aids, essentially saying that according to research, nothing can make your hair grow faster. Ultimately hair growth is guided by genetics, so short of tampering with DNA, there is really not much that you can do. Read the article here
I do want though to highlight that megatek is an animal product and it is not regulated by the same rules that human products have to go through (see article here). Ingredient labelling is not as strict meaning that they can label in any order and do not necessarily have to list all the ingredients (or any at all).
For example the pet label which is supposed to be the same as the equine (horse) label actually has different ingredients listed in a different order. I approached the manufacturer about this and was advised,
"The Equine and Pet Mega-Tek (16oz) Labels are identical. The (2oz) Pet Mega-Tek label is the same it just has different trademark names for some of the ingredients."
This actually is not true at all. There are specific ingredients that are actually listed which are NOT the same. See the highlighted ingredients and NOTE the different order
Pet label ingredients: Deionized water, stearalkonium chloride, glyceryl stearate, cetearyl alcohol, peg 40 castor oil, cetrimonium chloride, hydrolyzed keratin protein, tocopheryl acetate, DMDM hydantoin, methylparaben ,propylparaben, tetrasodium EDTA, fragrance.
Equine (Horse) label ingredients: Deionized water, hydrolyzed keratin protein, stearalkonium chloride, glyceryl stearate, peg 100 stearate, marine protein, peg 40, panthenol, dimethicone copolyol, magnesium citrate, Allantoin, amino acids, methylparaben, Mucopolysaccharides, propylparaben, imidazolidinyl urea, fragrance.
As for the product itself, looking at the ingredients (whichever list you believe), megatek is simply a hair conditioner.
Final thoughts: Exercise caution if you decide to purchase an animal product for human use.
