Vintage - Is it Back? Or is it Still in the Past?

I have a question for you, just one; are vintage styles of yesteryear back?

This stopped me in my tracks in a well-known high street shop the other day. You see, I was browsing through their latest stock of woolly cardigans and ruffle-necked tops when it came to me; are these styles of previous generations really back or are they simply running out of ideas for new styles?

I know there are lots of high street shops who have jumped on the vintage bandwagon recently, which is great if you loved the flowery dresses and T-bar heels of a couple of decades ago, but what if that's not enough? What if these designed-to-look-old-and-worn pieces don't do it for you? If you love these styles but want the real deals then there are plenty of places to hunt them down these days.

There are many shops and websites opening up with the aim of selling used and worn vintage clothing, with actual wear and tear and history to them. These items seem to be in high demand as people are realising that nothing can beat something with a bit of a story to tell, with bumps and bruises to prove their wisdom. Such shops are the big thing in cities like London at the moment; with plenty of people watching and following the likes of Sienna Miller and Kate Moss with their 'vintage' vintage garments mixed with 'new' vintage to make some wonderful new-meets-old outfits. The previously mentioned websites are popping up all over the web offering lovely little pieces with actual history, like the shops, and many vary their stock depending on where they are based.. For example the ones run by people near major cities usually have the old styles of many well-known designers of today, whereas the ones in smaller towns may not have as many of these big designer names but have lots of less-known ones which are beautiful in their own right. Some websites are also taking it upon themselves to 'mix it up' by selling vintage and retro pieces together.

There are some other places to source these sought-after pieces, places that are so obvious that people are forgetting them and heading to these newly set up shops in Oxford Street etc. These are car boot sales, flea markets and charity shops/second hand shops. With their low prices and their what-you-see-is-what-you-get attitude you know you'll always find a lovely little bargain, one with a life story.

So, in answer to my previous question, I personally feel that vintage styles are definitely back, circulating high street shops and being the main focus point for so many new businesses. Do I feel that 'new' vintage can compete with actual vintage pieces? Not a chance, that is, of course, if you like your items with histories and scrapes to show their wisdom, if not then you know where the high street is!
