Vintage George Nelson Clocks - Mid-Century Clocks by George Nelson

Designed by the man hailed as one of the founding fathers of American modernism, George Nelson vintage clocks have built a strong reputation among collectors and are avidly sought by many fans of mid-century design. George Nelson made roughly 150 designs for Howard Miller during his lifetime. In fact, he conceptualized and developed the first clocks for Miller back in 1947.

The first ever clock made by Nelson for the Howard Miller company was the Ball Clock. Interestingly, the clocks were just numbered by Miller rather than given actual names. So the Ball Clock, for instance, was sold as "Clock 4755". The Sunflower Clock was known as "Clock 2261". The Eye Clock, which is another popular George Nelson design, was known as "Clock 2238". The Eye Clock was advertised in Howard Miller brochures in its diagonal position, rather than the traditional horizontal position, so the 6 and 12 on the clock face are shown where the 9 and 3 would normally appear.

Nelson wanted variety in his creations, so he made sure to make his different designs in a variety of colors. For starters, he had six color variations for his Ball Clock, while the Sunflower Clock had three. This was a smart move on the part of Nelson because you really cannot discount the preferences of people worldwide.

Some other favorite George Nelson clocks among collectors include model #2239, otherwise known as the Spool/Spindle clock. As indicated by its moniker, the clock has spindles as markers for the hours 1 through 12. The clock itself has a diameter of 22.5 inches. Another famous model is the Asterisk clock, also known as model #2213. The design of this clock is quite simple, in the form of an asterisk, with a diameter of 10 inches. The design was conceptualized in the year 1964, and comes in a variety of colors - yellow, black, and white. Because of its simple clean design, this clock is one of the most popular ones made by George Nelson.

If you're just getting started collecting either mid-century vintage clocks or collecting items designed by George Nelson, it is pretty easy to do so online as there are many companies who specialize in mid-century design -- both contemporary reproductions and genuine vintage collectibles. Ebay is an another excellent source for vintage George Nelson clocks too. But it pays to get familiar with the designs for which there are licensed reproductions available if you decide to focus on the authentic vintage clocks from the mid-century. Usually there are some changes in details between the original and reproduction that make it easy to tell them apart from each other, but do your own due diligence instead of trusting what any online seller might claim. There are photos of George Nelson's clocks all over the web.
