Eat Green and Be Healthy


Although, we know the importance and health benefits of green vegetables but we often ignore them too. Many people either don’t like to eat green vegetables or too casual to add them in the diet. As the matter of fact, these green vegetables and especially dark green leafy vegetables are excellent sources of vitamins and minerals. These are super foods and our body needs to have more of these. If you look at the nutrition profile of green vegetables, you will they are extremely rich sources of vitamins (A, B, C, K) and also highly rich in folate and dietary fiber. In addition, green veggies are fantastic sources of antioxidants and valuable phytonutrients. Green vegetables and especially the dark green leafy vegetables also provide us minerals such as potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, iron, manganese, copper, calcium to selenium, and zinc. The USDA suggests each person to eat at minimum 3 cups of leafy green vegetables per week.

So, what are the health benefits these veggies provide us? Well, they do a lot good to our health. They can make your immune system strong so that your body can fight and resist diseases. Some of the major health benefits that we can get by eating green vegetables are – eating sufficient amount of green vegetables can reduce the chances of developing cancers. Green vegetables are very good food for good bone and teeth structures. Nutrients in these vegetables can reduce the Type II diabetes problems. Dark green vegetables are full of vitamins and minerals and antioxidants; that’s why they are an excellent food for the heart. They reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. Green vegetables are low in calorie and high in dietary fiber so they are a good food for the weight management.

Some of the great and nutritious green vegetables are spinach, broccoli, turnip greens, cabbage, collard greens, mustard green, romaine lettuce, kale and asparagus. These vegetables are very common and easily available in the market almost throughout the year. Therefore, you can easily add them into your regular diet.
