Brown sugar scalp scrub

While browsing youtube, I came across several videos for this brown sugar 'scalp scrub'. The recipe sounds and probably smells delicious

1. 4tbsps of brown sugar (coarse demerara/muscavado)
2. 2 tbsps of your conditioner (or yoghurt or shea butter or mango butter or coconut milk)
3. 1 tbsp honey (optional)

This is one of those things that I would think about eating rather than putting in my hair (Yep just like that coconut relaxer lol).

However I have to say that I personally wouldn't recommend this to anyone. Why? Well, raise your hand if would you wet your hair and then sand paper it? If you did raise your hand, we need to talk!

Brown sugar is coarse similar to some sand paper. Quite a few comments were to the effect of 'the coarser the better' as the sugar is not likely to dissolve easily. In my opinion this 'scalp scrub' has the potential to be quite damaging to the scalp and to the hair near the scalp. Normal everyday things like combing and styling damage the cuticle. The abrasiveness of these processes is an issue with real damage to the hair cuticle including furring it up or even chipping it off. In the worst cases, the entire cuticle can be missing from a section of hair ( Journal of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists,pg 263-286, 1987).

Even scratching with fingernails can create microtears or puncture skin. I think this scrub is not necessary. Hmm this makes me think about bentonite clay which is in essence fine sand.

Have you seen or heard of this one before? Have you tried it? What were your results?
