Soccer is unarguably the most popular game on planet earth. The game has evolved over the centuries though the rules of playing the game could be vastly different from the present era.

The game is a team sport and is played between two teams. There are 11 players in each team. The object of the game is to score by maneuvering the ball into the opposing goal. The game is played by kicking the ball and therefore also known as Football but players are also allowed to use some other body parts such as Head, Chest etc. in the process. Only Goalkeeper is allowed to use his arms and hands to stop the football.

The team that scores the most goals wins at the end of the game. If both teams end up scoring equal number of goals against each other then the game is declared as a Draw. Depending upon the format of the competition the game can be played in the extra time and if there is still no clear winner, Penalty Shootout is taken.

The original term for the game is Association Football. There was a need of having a unique name because Football was also referred to some other games being played in United States, Ireland, Australia and many other countries. But the use of this term Association Football has also diminished over the years by excessive use of the word Soccer and Football. The term Association Soccer could not be used because the word Soccer is considered derogatory by the Britons.

FIFA, Federation Intenationale De Football Association is the recognized international body for governing the game and its headquarters are located in Zurich.

6 Regional Confederations are recognized with FIFA:

*ASIA Asian Football Confederation (AFC)

*AFRICA Confederation of African Football (CAF)

*CENTRAL/NORTH AMERICA & CARIBBEAN Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF, also known as The Football Confederation)

*EUROPE Union of European Football Associations (UEFA)

*OCEANIA Oceania Football Confederation (OFC)

*SOUTH AMERICA Cofederacion Sudamericana de Futbol (South American Football Confederation, CONMEBOL)
